Word Chaining Brainstorming uses the extraordinary differences in the way each person free associates words to easily brainstorm a subject.

Word chaining is another term for free association of words.

Here is how to demonstrate the power of word chaining brainstorming:

Tell your team to make or mark 15 lines on a page. Then have them write at the top of the column a simple household word that you give them, such as home, house, walk, or run. Each person then is to quickly write a word on each line that the word above it brought to mind. Each word they write then becomes the trigger word for the next one. Of course, they must do this silently and without looking at what others are writing so as not to be influenced by another's choices.>br>When finished compare the last words each one has on their list reminding everyone that they all started with the same word.

This is a great ice-breaker to start a brainstorming session because it proves how many different can be generated by letting each person 'take the ball and run with it.' Once you have proven that it is possible to come up with many different ideas and that letting each person work some of the time on their own increases the diversity of ideas, you can use the same technique for the actual concept or word you need to brainstorm.
