On Your Own Mind Mapping

Use these tools and ideas to help you when you need to do on your own mind mapping

On your own mind mapping will either be part of a more extensive team mind mapping or, very often, is a necessity as you deal with problems and opportunities in business when you must work alone.

Take as large a piece of unlined paper as you can find, a piece of flip chart paper if available. Other options are a piece of colored paper or what I use a lot, a pad of newsprint that you can find in any arts and crafts store in many sizes. I keep a pad that is 9 x 12 with me when I travel and larger ones in my office. When you use cheap newsprint you feel freer to draw and scribble and then start over any time.

Have an assortment of colored pens or pencils around all the time. Those boxes of thin colored markers are perfect though you want to check whether they will bleed through what ever paper you are choosing to use.

Turn the paper horizontal. Put your issue, problem, or opportunity in the center. Start adding branches with ideas that come to mind. Don't edit yourself, just keep adding. When you slow down, choose one of the branches and just work on that one for a while.

The faster you work, the more fluid the ideas will come.

If you seem stalled pull out any of the tools I have recommended for brainstorming and let the images, questions, and other idea stimulators do their work on you.

Here are some of the best:

Or play with a puzzle like the Ball of Whacks until your ideas start flowing again or you get too frustrated with the puzzle, which ever comes first.

Take a brisk walk in the fresh air, but make sure you take a pen and paper. The ideas will start flowing and you will be angry at yourself if you can't note them down immediately. Don't assume you'll remember. It just doesn't happen that way.

You can also bring along something to record ideas. Many telephones and PDA's have a recording function. You can even call your office number from your mobile phone and leave a message for yourself.
